Mud Editions are leading the charge for the new Polaris quads. The brand is rolling out a Sportsman 850 Mud Edition and Sportsman XP 1000 Mud Edition. These have been around before but for 2025 they're new-and-improved. The 850 has Polaris' 78-horsepower engine and a sealed clutch intake, rack-mounted radiator, and a mud-specific transmission with extra low gearing. 13.5 inches of ground clearance at the bottom are mated with 30" Pro Armor MUD XT 2.0 Tires & 14" Aluminum Wheels. New for 2025 on the model are sealed LED headlights and the aforementioned tires. This model is available solely in Titanium Metallic and retails at $12,499 MSRP.

By 2030 the organizers of the Dakar Rally want to realize a dream of having the entire field made up of alternative fuel entries. To help meet that end they announced the program in 2021 as the Dakar Future Program. The Mission 1000 (M-1000) Class debuted at the 2024 Dakar Rally.

Maybe it wasn’t so sensible, actually, but I had the free time, and I had the Can-Am Outlander 850 DPS to put to work. I’ve mostly been riding the trails around home over the past few weeks, nothing too serious. I strapped a big plastic crate to the front rack and hauled in some rock to my property’s trails, repairing a deeply rutted water crossing. The Outlander’s front rack handled the job like a champ, although I was very close to, or over, the 120-pound limit. But I wanted to see how this quad handled an actual workload, and if the weather was foul, I’d get to see how it handled near-blizzard conditions as well.

Thierry Sabine was competing in the Abidjan-Nice Rally in December 1977. He got lost on the Tchigaï Plateau in the Ténéré desert. Sabine liked that part of Africa and planned to organize a rally starting in Paris and ending in Senegal.
